Getting into the spirit of giving at Elwood-John H. Glenn

December 8, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Students in Elwood-John H. Glenn High School’s World Language Honor Society recently stayed after school to fill 72 shoeboxes with toys, toiletries and school supplies that they collected for Operation Christmas Child.

These boxes, sent to humanitarian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse, will be distributed around the world to children in need this holiday season. The students also included a picture of the group and a personalized card in each box. The group then packed their cars and headed to the nearest drop off site — The Island Christian Church, located in East Northport.

This is the honor society’s second year participating in this act of holiday kindness, and advisors Ms. Nicole Correia and Ms. Nicole Gendjoian hope for it to continue annually for years to come.

Mepham classes battle for charity

December 7, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

On Nov. 8, the students and faculty of Wellington C. Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District came together for the eighth Battle of the Classes: Battle for a Cause to raise money for the Senior Service Learning Project’s partnership with Boots on the Ground NY.

More than 700 students participated in the event held in the gym at the Brookside School. Leading up to the event, students participated in a series of pre-events including, a Penny Wars competition, generating more than $1,100, American Pride Day and Class Color Day.

“The night of the event, the students competed against each other and the faculty team in a variety of relay races, the famous ‘Pirate Relay’ and a dance competition,” said social studies teacher Kerry Dennis.

The night’s emcee was special education teacher, Anthony Augugliaro, and the festivities were covered live by the Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting Program.

The Class of 2018 dominated the pre-events and the night’s relays, earning the title of champions.

“The spirit and enthusiasm in the gym that night represent the incredible school spirit possessed by the Mepham community as well as the continued desire to give back to charitable organizations like Boots on the Ground NY,” said social studies teacher Chris Patten.

Combined with their efforts for the Flag Field of Honor, currently on display at Mepham, the students in Participation in Government, under the direction of Patten and Dennis, have raised more than $10,000 for Boots on the Ground NY.

Coats for those in need

All of the coats collected will be donated to local families in need. The coat drive is just one of the many fundraisers the K-Kids is hosting this school year. In November, they collected enough food to feed 15 local families for Thanksgiving.
